Under the law, employers with 15 employees or more must give 5 paid sick days per year to their employees.
The new law builds upon and expands on previous legislation by:
- Accelerates coverage to employees in business with 15 and 20 workers, which affects 140,000 people.
- Removes exceptions from the law related to manufacturing sector, which extending paid sick leave coverage to 76,000 workers, approximately half of whom don’t currently have any paid sick days.
- Expands the definition of family to grandparents, grandchildren and siblings that workers can legally care for using paid sick time.
- Eliminates certain economic benchmarks that could have delayed the effective date of the law.
